How Do Computers and Screens Affect My Eyes?

eyes-computer-screensIn this day and age, we are surrounded by screens – from laptops to tablets to phones, we are constantly using digital technology. Unfortunately, this prolonged viewing can require our eyes to work harder, which can take a toll on our vision. If you frequently look at computer screens for an extended period of time, you may suffer from what is called Computer Vision Syndrome, or Digital Eye Strain.

When you spend this much time concentrating on a screen, you can experience a number of symptoms, including:

  • Strained eyes
  • Headaches
  • Dry eyes
  • Blurred vision

These problems are typically temporary, diminishing after you finish focusing on the screen. To prevent this discomfort from worsening in the future, however, you should identify the cause of your symptoms. This can include factors like poor lighting, a glare on the screen, improper viewing position or distance, or a combination of these. Additionally, if you have a vision impairment condition such as astigmatism, nearsightedness, or farsightedness, you should seek corrective treatment options to improve your ability to focus, as well as reduce your potential of experiencing discomfort.
