Dr. Mayer Introduces iStent® Technology for Glaucoma Patients
The Eye Doctors of Washington are excited to announce the addition of the iStent® Trabecular Micro-Bypass to our practice. It is the smallest medical device ever approved by the FDA and is designed to treat mild-to-moderate open-angle glaucoma during cataract surgery procedures. Dr. Hylton Mayer utilizes the new implant technology to relieve pressure in the eye, helping to slow the progression of glaucoma – a condition which can result in total vision loss.
Intraocular pressure (IOP) is a result of fluid buildup in the eye when it isn’t draining properly (characteristics of glaucoma). If left untreated, this can lead to permanent vision loss. The iStent® device can be put into place during cataract surgery, acting as an opening for liquid to drain through, and therefore relieving some of the pressure. It is a tiny, one-millimeter device that is implanted into the eye and cannot be seen or felt.
The iStent® is a significant advancement in the ophthalmology field as it can provide a permanent solution for cataract/glaucoma patients who have a blockage in their eye’s natural drainage system. Since it reduces eye pressure, our patients can also reduce their dependence on the expensive eye drops needed to control glaucoma. In some patients, it can completely eliminate the need for medication altogether.
