Top 3 Ways to Protect Your Eyes This Summer
As discussed in our previous blog post, “The Burning Truth Behind UV Radiation and Your Eye Health,” Dr. Chantel Garcia says taking the proper precautions when outside can help you avoid unnecessary damage to the eyes. The optometrist explains that people should start early and wear protection often to make the most impact for avoiding the effects of UV light exposure throughout the years. Teaching good habits to children, especially, is crucial in protecting the future of their eye health.
Since both the sun and its ultraviolet (UV) rays can increase your risk of developing serious eye conditions, Dr. Garcia encourages patients to use three additive components to help protect your eyes during the sunny summer months:
Sunglasses
Tinted glasses are one of the most powerful and effective ways you can filter harsh sunlight and UV rays. Although contact lenses often have UV protection built in, Dr. Garcia reveals they do not protect the whites of the eyes. Additionally, sunglasses can help you avoid eye damage resulting from reflections, like snow or water, that can increase exposure since your eye will absorb reflected light that would normally be absorbed by a non-reflecting object.
Hats
Providing shade for your eyes with a hat is a great way to limit direct sunlight and UV rays. Besides just protecting your eyes, the layer can also preserve the health of the sensitive eyelid skin that can develop cancer from years of harmful sun exposure.
Sunscreen
Like hats, sunscreen is a must for protecting the skin around your eyes. sBy wearing sunscreen daily with at least an SPF of 15, you can experience considerable protection for your skin.
