What is iLASIK?
You’ve probably been hearing about iLASIK on the radio and may be wondering if it’s new technology and how it’s different from what’s already out there. iLASIK is new in that it’s a new combination of technologies. At Eye Doctors of Washington, Dr. Clinch and Dr. Kang have been using the Intralase and CustomVue technologies in almost all of their laser vision correction procedures for a few years now. Intralase is the laser that is used to create the corneal flap in the first step of LASIK, and CustomVue is the wavefront-guided software on the laser that actually corrects your nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
What iLASIK is is the coupling of the Intralase and CustomVue technologies as one platform owned by one company instead of two separate companies. Using the iLASIK platform, our surgeons create the corneal flap using the Intralase and, in a matter of seconds, rotate the patient under the CustomVue laser to correct their vision. So when you hear the term iLASIK, you’re hearing about the technology that Dr. Paul Kang and Dr. Thomas Clinch have been using in their Chevy Chase and Washington, DC offices for many years now. iLASIK is just a succinct way to say CustomVue LASIK using the Intralase laser to create the corneal flap.
